ICS Postions
« on: September 07, 2011, 09:32:13 AM »
We are starting the planning stages for a large event and I notice that some of the standard ICS positions aren't available for assignment under the "personnel" tab.  Am I missing something or do other teams just print out the proper form and hand write the names in?

Thanks,

Which ICS positions are missing?

MM isn't designed to cover 100% of the whole ICS system.  The very first prototype of MM actually had divisions and much more complex ICS support.  But what we found was 96% of missions really didn't use all that extra complexity.  Having all those extra options just made MM too hard to learn and use.  So a "simplistic" approach won out over having "everything".  Hope that makes sense.  If you think something useful is missing, please let me know.

Since a search is really under OPS in the grand scheme of ICS the term that is starting to be utilized instead of Incident Commander is "Search Mission Coordinator"  The SMC is really a Search Manager that oversees the search incident and has their own operations, planning, logistics, etc.  In the event of a very large incident the SMC would report to the operations section since they are really just looking for one or two people in the middle of a much larger disaster.

We tend to avoid the term "Search" in relation to mission because MM is being used for so many other type missions.  We recently used MM to do a large evacuation mission for example.  "Incident Commander" seems to be the most generic term  ;).

Just a quick note about this old post.  The basic ICS Positions can now be customized in the Configuration screen in the Mission Screens and Fields section.
